Five questions: Firework safety
July 2, 2009
Q: What are some safety tips for those shooting off fireworks?
A: Never allow children to play with or ignite fireworks. Read and follow all warnings and instructions that are listed on the firework. Be sure other people are out of range before you light the firework. Only light fireworks on a smooth, flat surface away from houses and any other flammable materials. Never try to relight fireworks that have not fully functioned. Have some type of water supply around in case of a malfunction or fire. Never smoke around fireworks.
Q: What are some safety tips for those who are around people shooting off fireworks?
A: Stay back at a safe distance, and pay special attention of what is going on around you.
Q: How many fireworks-related calls did you get last Fourth of July? How many injuries?
A: In the year 2008, it was a pretty safe year. We did not have a single call that was fireworks-related.
Q: What are some of the worst fireworks to buy in terms of safety? The best?
A: Some of the worst fireworks that you can buy are unlabeled fireworks and homemade fireworks. The best option when purchasing fireworks is to purchase these items from a legal consumer fireworks stand.
Q: Any other suggestions you would have for people wanting to enjoy the holiday but without fireworks?
A: The only suggestion that I would have for someone that wanted to enjoy the holiday without purchasing fireworks is to go and watch the fireworks displays that are put on by professionals.
