Q: Why start a new soccer team?

A: Parks and Recreation offers a recreational league, which is great for beginners to intermediate level youth to learn the game of soccer. There comes a point in which boys and girls want to challenge their own skills and evaluate where their talents lay in the “soccer world.” Developing a team of young men interested in expanding their soccer skills is our primary goal.

Q: Who is involved in putting this new team, the Wy Fires, together?

A: Kim Nelson and (myself) are Bonner Springs residents that have a passion for developing the soccer skills and self-confidence of young boys and girls. Kim is the coach of the team and (I will handle) communication and administrative tasks. We both have young boys that love the game of soccer and want to challenge their skills. Kim is a sixth-grade science teacher at Clark Middle School, and (I am) the Bonner Springs Parks and Recreation Director. High school soccer coach Mike Mullen will consult and guide the Wy Fire staff.

Q: What ages are eligible to participate?

A: Any male born after July 31, 1996, is eligible to participate.

Q: How many young people are you looking for to put the team together?

A: The ideal roster size is 16 players. This is a competitive team, which means that players are expected to attend practices and give their best effort at all times. Sportsmanship, hustle, teamwork and skill development is the foundation in which this team will be built.

Q: How can young people get involved?

A: To participate on the team, a youth needs to attend a tryout at 4 p.m. Sunday, July 26 or 6:30 p.m. Thursday, July 30. Both practices will take place at the high school practice soccer field on 138th Street.
