Edwardsville protest ends with preliminary agreement
June 9, 2009
A protest Monday night of Edwardsville Hall by the Fire Union Local 64 ended in 15 minutes after a preliminary agreement was reached.
The union members were protesting the proposed plan to lay off one firefighter from the Edwardsville Fire Department to help make up a $200,000 shortfall in city revenues. As the union members marched in a circle of the city hall parking lot, union president Bob Wing met with Edwardsville Mayor John “Tiny” McTaggart and council member Mark Bishop.
Once the city officials emerged from city hall, the group gathered as the announcement was made that an agreement had been reached. While the details of the agreement could not be reveled, Wing said the proposal would be brought to the Edwardsville fire employees for their approval.
See Thursday’s Chieftain for more about the protest.
