Parents of children left home alone charged
June 9, 2009
Two children, ages 4 and 1, were discovered unattended in their apartment, after a complaint was made to the Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services last week.
The children, both boys, were found alone in their apartment on Thursday morning, June 4, in the Sun River Apartments complex, 402 River Falls Road.
Detective Guy Redinger, with the Edwardsville Police Department, said that after officials with SRS arrived at the apartment and received no response at the door, the Edwardsville Police Department was called. He said the police department met SRS at the scene where, upon entry into the apartment, the children were discovered. Redinger said the boys were sent to Children’s Mercy Hospital “as a precaution,” but had no further information as to what condition they were in when found and how long they had been left alone in the apartment. He said they are currently being kept in the custody of SRS.
Redinger said the parents of the children, 30-year-old Suraju Oyekanmi and 26-year-old Natisha Rose were at work when they were taken into police custody on Thursday. The two were charged Friday afternoon, June 5, by the Wyandotte County district attorney with two counts of aggravated endangering a child. They were originally placed in the Wyandotte County Jail but were both released on bond, set at $10,000 apiece, over the weekend.
Redinger said the family had lived in the area for about a year.
