Q: What are some activities and events the Bonner Springs YMCA has in store for children over the summer?

A: We’re taking registrations for a couple of programs starting up in July, one of those being tennis lessons for ages 5 years and up. Another program beginning in July is our Pop Flys program for 3- and 4-year-olds. Pop Flys is designed to introduce the basic “FUNdamentals” of baseball while interacting and building social skills for participants.

Q: How have you been enjoying your new position since you started May 1?

A: Everyone here is great, and I’m really enjoying it. There are a lot of similarities between the YMCA and community I moved from, so it’s very exciting to continue to feel at home.

Q: Why did you take the position?

A: I started working for the YMCA when I was attending Missouri Southern State University in Joplin, Mo. Although I was working toward a degree in Criminal Justice Administration, I knew that I wanted to pursue a career with the YMCA. Besides working for Gold’s Gym for seven months when I first moved here to Kansas City, I have been with the YMCA collectively for almost eight years and plan to retire with the YMCA.

Q: What are some long-term plans you have for the YMCA?

A: My long-term plans and goals for the YMCA is to continue to build on the existing quality of the sports programs while implementing and introducing new programming that could reach more youth and adults in the community.

Q: How can people get involved in summer activities at the YMCA?

A: You can stop by or call our facility located directly between Bonner Springs High School and Clark Middle School, or you can go to our Web site at kansascityymca.org and browse all the exciting things going on in our association.
