Phone scam targets water utility customers

At least two Bonner Springs residents have received phone calls in a scam asking for banking account information.
Lieutenant Rick Schubert with the Bonner Springs Police Department said the utility department contacted him to report a scam. He said at least two people, and possibly more, have received phone calls from someone pretending to be a representative with the water utilities.
Schubert said the utility customers were told they forgot to sign their check and were asked for their banking account information. It is unsure if the scammers were successful with any of the calls.
“The utility department is not going to call asking for your account numbers ever,” Schubert said.
Anyone who receives a similar call is urged to report the incident with the police department.

“For my own personal use, I only go a couple times a year to mail gifts, usually around Christmas and family birthdays. At that time I usually buy a couple books of stamps that last for most of the year! For professional use, I go a couple times a month to check our PO Box.”
