Incumbent Sheriff LeRoy Green Jr. will advance to the general election ballot, but it was retired KCKPD officer Donald Ash who gathered the most votes during Tuesday’s primary election.

Out of 7,786 votes cast, Ash received 3,486 while the count for Green came in at 3,034.

“We’re very pleased about that,” Ash said. “It exceeded our expectations, considering there were four candidates running.”

The other two candidates were Park Ranger Joe Pierceall, 475 votes, and safety and security program director Robert Whisman, 791 votes.

Ash has lived in Wyandotte County his entire life and worked on the KCKPD for 35 years. Green is a former professional boxer who has served two consecutive terms as sheriff.

Also on the primary ballot for voters in Edwardsville and Bonner Springs were candidates for Unified Government District 2 at large commissioner. Thomas (TJ) Reardon and former District 3 Commissioner John J. Mendez will both advance to the general election. Reardon received 1,090 votes while Mendez polled 947 votes. Candidates Eric E. Gonzalez and Eric Hite trailed with 515 and 327 votes, respectively.

Despite there being only an 8.7 percent voter turnout at the polls Tuesday, Green said he was pleased.

“We’re very happy with the turnout,” Green said. “We wish more folks would have gotten out. I think a lot of folks we talked to didn’t know it was the day to vote.”
