Chieftain earns KPA awards

The Bonner Springs Chieftain picked up six first-place awards and 18 awards overall in the Kansas Press Association’s 2009 Awards of Excellence competition.

Competing in the KPA’s Nondaily Division 1, the Chieftain won first place for youth story, “Minors charged with possession weigh options,” by Jesse Truesdale. Nicole Kelley took first-place honors in three categories, education story, “Fees cause frustration,” religion story, “To hell and back: one man’s journey to God,” and news story, “Sonic workers’ actions touted as life-saving for resident.” The Chieftain also won for design and layout and best newspaper Web site.

The Chieftain won second-place awards for best use of photos; Kelley’s agricultural story, “Searching for the big score”; Kevin Anderson’s sports photo, “Braves contenders”; Truesdale’s news story, “Woodlands to close racing doors”; news and writing; headline writing; and sports feature story, by Chris Wristen

Third place awards went to the Chieftain for best front page; youth story, “Delaware Ridge students strut their stuff,” by Truesdale; Anderson’s feature photo, “Alley Oop”; Kelley’s news photo, “Storm blows into town”; and Kelley’s feature story, “Cancer doesn’t hold back politician from doing job.”

The awards will be presented during the association’s annual convention in April in Wichita.
