Q: How does it feel to have won a national award?
A: It’s pretty awesome. Not too many companies get to say they got to do this. It was a buddy of mine that kind of pushed to get me involved. He’s been in the business a long time so when he says we’re doing a good job, that’s a big compliment.
Q: How did you get started in the landscaping business?
A: I was working for my stepdad at his auto motive business and a friend asked if I wanted a summer job in landscaping. I would have been 14 years old then and I’m 33 now. I’ve been doing it ever sense. I just like the feeling of helping someone else that’s not able to do it themselves. That’s where I get my satisfaction, helping others.
Q: Do you have any particular philosophy when it comes to your landscaping designs?
A: I just look for the wow factor in every job. I’m not into straight lines. I think way outside the box. I always try to be unique and that makes me feel good.
Q: How do you come up with inspirations for your designs?
A: I usually go to a home and sit and look at it. Sometimes I’m there for five minutes and sometimes I’m there for an hour. When I leave though, I usually have an idea of what the design should look like. I also look at other landscaper’s designs and tweak them to fit my style.
Q: Do you have any advice for people wanting to spruce up their own backyards?
A: Sit down and study the project. Figure out the cons and pros of the project before getting started. When it comes to landscaping one thing is for sure: it’s a lot of labor. More than you really realize.
