Former KCKPD officer seeks council re-election
March 19, 2009
When it comes to John Eickhoff’s race for re-election to the Edwardsville City Council, his promise remains the same as when he first started: to keep taxes low.
Eickhoff was appointed to the city council position left vacant by Bobby Lane’s resignation in Dec. 2007. Since that time, Eickhoff said he’s worked hard to give back to the community.
“I want to maintain the lowest taxes possible, especially during this recession,” he said. “I want to get the community as many services as possible with what we have.”
Eickhoff said that during tough times, council members need to maintain a balance so that community members are not the ones adversely affected. Some of those services that Eickhoff would like to see maintained or improved are the parks and recreation programs and the police and fire departments.
Knowledge about the police department especially is something that Eickhoff said he can bring to the table that most other people cannot. As a former Kansas City, Kan., police officer who was forced to retire due to a serious injury in the line of duty, Eickhoff said he understands how to avoid wasteful spending.
“I have a lot of experience with law enforcement and how a city runs and pays for the budget for law enforcement,” he said. “I can make sure we’re actually getting what the money is worth, that we’re spending the money correctly with law enforcement and fire and not wasting anything, which is easy to do.”
Since retiring from law enforcement, Eickhoff has been busy spending time with his wife and two children and volunteering in the community. He is currently working on his nursing degree from Kansas City Kansas Community College.
