Early victory is first step to more girls soccer success

April 1, 2010

The Bonner Springs girls soccer team picked up its first victory of the season Tuesday night at home as it disposed of Tonganoxie in overtime, 2-1.

Alexis Clark scored the first goal on a penalty kick, and senior Alex Argundo buried the game-winner in overtime.

The victory was the Bravettes’ first of the season. They lost to Topeka Seaman, 5-0, last week.

Coach Mike Moulin said he thinks that although his team is made up of younger girls — only two seniors are on the roster — his team is showing signs of confidence and talent with the ball like they hadn’t in the first three years of the program at BSHS.

“These girls work so hard,” Moulin said. “They all get along well and really show great work ethic on and off the field. They are a fun group.”

Moulin said he sees his team’s speed as its best attribute, followed closely by the back four defenders.

“There have been a lot of surprises, and some girls are really stepping up already,” Moulin said.

Despite having a winning record last year, the Bravettes are setting their sights higher in 2010. They have games against soccer powers Bishop Miege and St. Thomas Aquinas later this season. Those are games that would have been certain to end 10-0 in the past, but Moulin believes they could be more competitive this time and should prepare his team for league play and beyond.

Argundo, the team’s most consistent goal-scorer in 2009, is looking to help lead the Bravettes to a successful year.

“We are working hard and we know that to get to the level we were at last season — or even better — we have to keep it up,” Argundo said. “Most of our defense is made up of younger girls and they are doing great, it’s just a matter of putting it all together. I want to be a good leader and give it my all.”

The team’s other senior, Tessa Seaton, is poised to leave her mark on Bonner Springs soccer. She has been a key member of the only four teams in program history.

“You can already see improvement on this team,” Seaton said. “From the beginning of the game to the end of the game against (Seaman) and then from that game to the game (against Tonganoxie) you could see improvement. If we have that much improvement between games, before the end of the season we can be (pretty good).

“I remember how excited I was when we had the first team my freshman year and thought about being able to play all four years, and I have stuck with it. We have had people come and go, and I think it is important that us captains are able to show the younger girls how things are supposed to be done.”
