Bonner Springs boys, girls sixth at Shawnee Mission West Invitational

April 29, 2010

Thunderstorms washed out Bonner Springs’ home track meet on Thursday, but BSHS sent a partial squad to Friday’s Shawnee Mission West Invitational.

The Braves turned in a handful of strong performances in the boys competition along the way to a sixth-place finish in the team standings.

Distance standout Brooks Ballou led the way with a pair of top-two finishes. He won the 1,600-meter run in 4 minutes, 43.82 seconds, and later took second in the 3,200 in 10:23.77.

Jake Barren was the top BSHS thrower as he finished third in the shot put with a distance of 45 feet, 8 inches.

Cameron Callahan also had individual success in the 100. He finished fourth in 11.46. Olathe North’s Adonis Saunders, one of the top sprinters in Class 6A, won the race in 10.83.

Two of Bonner Springs’ relay teams also turned in strong performances. Clayton Rhodes, Nick Carver, JJ Jackson and Callahan teamed up to place second in the 400-meter relay in 44.26. The foursome later competed in the 1,600-meter relay and finished third in 3:31.21.

The BSHS girls also placed sixth as a team, and Bridgett Bradley took top honors for the team with a third-place finish in the discus. Her best throw was 106-2.

Josie Freeby added a pair of seventh-place finishes in the shot put (33-3) and discus (94-8).
