Bonner Springs girls suffer setbacks to Bishop Miege, Piper
April 29, 2010
It didn’t take long for Bishop Miege to take control of its girls soccer game Friday at David Jaynes Stadium.
The Stags, a longtime state power in Class 5-1A, struck barely two minutes into the game en route to an 11-1 victory against Bonner Springs.
For BSHS, it was just the latest in a series of games against top-tier competition as the Bravettes seek to build on last year’s 9-9 record. The final score wasn’t pretty, but coach Mike Moulin has used the tougher slate — which included a game last week against another powerhouse, St. Thomas Aquinas — to figure out his team’s weaknesses and expose it to the highest level of competition.
There were positives for the Bravettes against Miege. They had two strong attacks during the first 90 seconds of the game before Miege made its first challenge.
After the Stags struck just 2:04 into the game on a breakaway goal by Maggie Hair, the Stags didn’t score again until the 21st minute. Both teams created a handful of opportunities during that span.
Hair made in the Bravettes’ defensive third of the field and fired in her second goal in the 21st minute to make it 2-0. She tacked on another goal three minutes later.
Liz Ulrich knocked home a goal during a scramble in front of the BSHS goal to give Miege a 4-0 lead in the 29th minute. Bonner Springs answered less than a minute later. Alexis Clark lofted a corner kick into the box that was deflected back out to her. She launched another shot that bent over the Miege goalkeeper and tucked just under the crossbar.
Before Bonner Springs could build on the momentum, Miege struck again. Hannah Crandall scored on a breakaway and gave her team a 5-1 lead that stood through halftime.
Ulrich scored twice in the second half and Hair added her fourth goal of the game. Rosie Youngstrom, Jen French and Dani Intfen all scored in the second half for the Stags as they earned the mercy-rule victory.
Miege improved to 6-4 with the victory while Bonner Springs dropped to 3-6-1.
PIPER OVERPOWERS BSHS
Bonner Springs ran into another opponent with speedy forwards during its Tuesday home game against Piper, and that game didn’t go well for the Bravettes either.
The Pirates ran away with a 4-0 victory.
Even though Piper was in control of the game most of the way, the Bravettes never stopped trying to rally. They created numerous chances to score during the final 20 minutes but were unable to find the back of the net. Anna Deegan had a shot from point-blank range that was knocked out of bounds by the Pirates’ goalkeeper with about 10 minutes to go. On the ensuing corner kick, Chelsea Crawford fired a shot on goal that was saved.
BSHS now is 3-7-1 this season. The Bravettes next play at 6 p.m. today at Bishop Ward. Then they play at 4:30 p.m. Friday at Maranatha Academy.
