The Chieftain is adding some hardware to its walls after picking up nine first-place plaques in the Kansas Press Association’s 2010 Awards of Excellence competition. The association handed out the awards Saturday at its annual convention in Topeka.

In addition to the first-place honors, the Chieftain also took second in three categories and took third in two categories against other nondaily Kansas newspapers with circulation of up to 1,750 subscribers.

“It’s always nice to earn recognition for our news and sports reporting,” said John Taylor, Chieftain editor. “It’s a testament to our staff for its hard work in delivering the best news they can week in and week out to our readers and advertisers.”

Staff writer Nicole Kelley won top honors in three categories, best news story, local business story and education story. Staff writer Melissa Treolo drew top honors in two categories — investigative story and series — for her look into the financial situation facing the National Agricultural Center and Hall of Fame. Sports editor Chris Wristen earned a first place for top sports story.

In addition, the staff took honors for best design and layout, best newspaper Web site and best special section.

Staff members also won second-place honors in news photo, agricultural story, and sports story. Third-place awards won by the Chieftain were in series and sports story.
