Outgoing BSHS student wants to leave lasting impression
April 29, 2010
Editors note: This continues a series in which The Chieftain will introduce the community to members of the Bonner Springs High School Class of 2010. Throughout the series, we will profile a cross section of BSHS seniors about what the future holds for them.
Jake Barren has taken full advantage of his time at Bonner Springs High School.
From captain of the football team, student council president, a member of National Honor Society and valedictorian, Barren has filled his schedule and excelled at it all. But that’s not what the BSHS senior hopes people remember him for as he prepares to graduate with the rest of his class in a May 13 ceremony.
“I don’t want to be remembered by all that,” Barren said of the long list of extracurricular activities. “I hope they say, ‘He was a really good guy.’ I hope they remember my actions and how I always tried to treat everyone nicely.”
After leaving the school he’s attended for the last four years, Barren will be attending the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md.
With a father who was a military officer who graduated from WestPoint, Barren said several people always suspected he’d chose a career in the military. He himself, however, was unsure until just recently.
When looking at his future, Barren says he’s still not sure what he wants his career to be, so he’s using the Naval Academy as a way to not rush that decision.
“It’s a great way to go to school, get a great education and ensure a job after,” he said.
Barren will be in school for four years and will continue his commitment for another fives years following that.
“An extra benefit is that I will feel good about whatever I do because I will be helping people,” Barren said.
Barren said he was excited to be graduating high school, but while peers will be enjoying a summer vacation before jumping into life’s next step, Barren he be leaving for Annapolis on July 1 where he will begin six weeks of basic training before school starts in the fall.
