SUV collides with bikers
August 12, 2010
What started out as an afternoon filled with excitement for 40-50 motorcyclists heading out on a charity Poker Run, turned scary quickly when one of the bikes was hit by a car.
Earl and Amanda Huffman, owners of the Speedway Grill and Kansas City, Kan. residents, were riding with the pack of charity riders Saturday. The couple was stopped on the shoulder of the on-ramp of Kansas Highway 7 at Nettleton Avenue waiting for the rest of the riders to enter the highway.
The couple’s bike was hit from behind at about noon by a Chevrolet Suburban also trying to enter northbound K-7. The SUV was driven by Troy Daniels, of Bonner Springs.
Lt. Rick Schubert with the Bonner Springs Police Department said Daniels reported the bike was located in a blindspot and he did not see them.
The Huffmans were both knocked off the bike and were taken to Overland Park Regional Hospital. While there were no broken bones, Earl Huffman said he and his wife had injuries to their right legs and Amanda Huffman had “road rash” across her body.
The two were riding in the Poker Run portion of a charity event being put on for Edwardsville resident Randy Freeman, who is getting a kidney donated by friend Terry Long.
