Bonner ACT scores up from last year

August 26, 2010

ACT test-takers at Bonner Springs High School showed improvement, with tests taken in 2010 showing an average composite score of 21.2 out of 36 points, according to results released last week.

That’s a slight increase over the 2009 average composite score of 20.9, which was also an increase over the 20.5 average composite score seen in 2008.

Bonner students this year stacked up well against the national average, too, beating the average composite score of 21. Bonner students, however, scored just below the state average of 22.

Scores aren’t the only increase, says Rebecca Plaschka, BSHS counselor. She said 83 students took the test in 2010, compared to 69 last year.

Joe Hornback, BSHS principal, said the improvement seen during the last two years was reinforcing the fact the school was placing the focus on those areas of learning the students need most as they prepare for college: English, science and social studies.

“As we continue to get kids to take more of those courses, we’ll see our ACT scores continue to go up,” he said.

To keep the improvement momentum going, Plaschka said workshops would be offered throughout the year for juniors and seniors preparing to take the ACT in 2011. For seniors, ACT preparation workshops will be offered Sept. 15, 22 and 29. For juniors, workshops will be offered Feb. 23, March 2 and March 9 in 2011.
