Mom arrested after driving drunk with her children in the car

August 30, 2010

A Kansas City, Kan., woman was arrested Sunday after authorities said she was driving drunk, sideswiped another car in Shawnee and later left her children on the side of the road.

Trooper Greg Peters of the Kansas Highway Patrol said the incident occurred just before 9:30 p.m. on Holliday Drive just east of Interstate 435. Elizabeth Haywood, 39, was allegedly driving westbound and started to come into the eastbound lanes, causing her vehicle to sideswipe another car.

Haywood continued to drive west, so Peters said the man in the car that had been sideswiped called police, turned around and followed her. He followed Haywood as Holliday turned into 47th Street until it stopped at a red light with several other cars at Kansas Highway 7. Once it stopped, Haywood’s 10-year-old daughter reportedly got out of the car and started yelling for help.

Another woman waiting at the stoplight got out of her car and tried talking to Haywood, who was yelling at her daughter to get back in the car. While the bystander tried talking to Haywood, the 10-year-old girl got her little sister out of the car. Haywood then drove away, the rear door still open, heading north on K-7.

Shawnee Police and the Highway Patrol arrived at the scene around 9:40 p.m., after Haywood had driven off. Kansas City, Kan., Police intercepted Haywood at her home, where she was arrested. In addition to a DUI charge, she was charged with two counts of child endangerment and for failing to stop for an accident.

Haywood entered a plea of not guilty at a first appearance in court Monday and posted her bond, which was set at $10,000. A preliminary hearing is scheduled in September.
