Another slow start proves costly as Bravettes fall to Cyclones

February 4, 2010

— The Bonner Springs girls basketball team was punished by Bishop Ward for another slow start.

The Bravettes dug themselves a 15-4 hole by the end of the first quarter and battled back only to fall, 39-34, Tuesday night at Kansas City Kansas Community College.

Ward maintained its 11-point lead throughout the second and third quarters as the teams traded baskets and small runs.

Ward’s Taylor Williams buried back-to-back 3-pointers early in the fourth quarter to bolster the lead before Meg Fowler scored two baskets during a game-ending 9-1 run by the Bravettes that whittled the deficit back to single digits.

Kylie Burns scored a game-high 22 points for Ward and Williams finished with 12 points.

Haley Hoffine led BSHS with eight points.

The brightest spot for the Bravettes in the loss was the significant playing time gained by freshmen Hoffine, Anna Deegan and Cassa Holloway, all of which have seen extended varsity action in recent games.

The Bravettes now are 2-11 overall this season and 0-7 in 2010. Included in that stretch was an eighth-place finish Saturday at the Wellsville Top Gun Tournament.

The Bravettes were slated to play Mill Valley Wednesday night in a game that was rescheduled from Jan. 8. Results were unavailable at press time. Up next is a 6 p.m. Tuesday home game against Tonganoxie.
