Bonner Springs wrestlers edged by SFT, Osawatomie in duals
February 4, 2010
When it comes to wrestling duals, every point counts.
Winning a match isn’t always good enough if a wrestler was capable of winning by major decision, technical fall or pin and the garnering of more points. At the same time, losing by fewer points or fighting off a pin can factor big in the team scores.
In the end, some of those extra points made a big difference as the Bonner Springs wrestling team lost a pair of duals Thursday, Jan. 28, to Osawatomie and Santa Fe Trail.
Osawatomie beat BSHS, 36-33, and Santa Fe Trail won by a 34-32 score.
The Braves now are 6-5 in duals this season.
“They were both very hard-fought duals, but we ended up on the short end,” BSHS coach Brandon Jobe said.
Against Osawatomie, seven Braves won matches. They were 103-pounder Justus Seaton, 112-pounder Nick Korosec, 125-pounder Caleb Seaton, 135-pounder Jonathan Blackwell, 140-pounder Aaron Puckett, 160-pounder Jared Clements and 171-pounder Brian Callahan.
“This match came down to the heavyweights,” Jobe said. “Jake Barren hit a nice headlock early in the first period, but could not record the fall. The Osawatomie wrestler (Trevor Needham) eventually was too much for Jake. We gave up too many bonus points — that ultimately cost us the win.”
Against Santa Fe Trail, wins were turned in by the Seaton brothers, Blackwell, Puckett, Clements, Callahan and Barren.
“(This was) another exciting dual that saw many tight matches. Once again we gave up too many bonus points and lost a couple close matches,” Jobe said. “We still need to work on staying tough and finishing matches.”
The Braves also sent five wrestlers to the Osawatomie Tournament on Saturday. Four of them brought home medals. Spencer Frank placed third at 130 pounds, Puckett was second at 140 pounds, Clements took fourth at 160 pounds and Cameron Summers was sixth at 189 pounds.
“I was very pleased with the way this small group wrestled on Saturday. They wrestled with great intensity and a strong desire to win,” Jobe said.
Bonner competes again at 5:30 p.m. today against Tonganoxie and Lansing (#3 in Class 5A) at Tonganoxie.
“We lost to Tonganoxie (40-32) earlier in the year at the Kaw Valley League Duals, and have not faced Lansing this year,” Jobe said. “I feel we are a much improved and stronger team than we were in early December.”
Bonner also will wrestle at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Wyandotte County Championships at Harmon High School.
BRAVES IN THE RANKINGS
Two Bonner Springs wrestlers were included in the latest edition of the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Association’s Class 5A state rankings.
Caleb Seaton was ranked third at 119 pounds and Aaron Puckett was sixth at 140 pounds.
