Police caution residents about new phone scam
February 9, 2010
A new scam as been brought to the attention of the Bonner Springs Police Department and officers are cautioning residents.
Recently, a Bonner Springs couple reported they received a phone call from someone claiming to be their grandson. The man said he was in jail in Canada and need money wired to him for bail.
Lt. Rick Schubert said that this was not the first report of this same scam attempt that the Bonner Springs department has received. He said this type of scam was getting to be popular and cautioned residents not to believe the caller if such a call is received.
He said he thought the scammers were targeting older residents because the extended family — unlike parents — are less likely to recognize their family members voice.
Schubert said that so far no one in Bonner Springs has reported actually sending money to such a caller.
The Bonner Springs police have contacted the Canadian police to make them aware of the scam.
If you receive a similar call that you believe to be a scam, Schubert said to call the police department at 422-7800.
