Bravettes batter Turner for second straight victory
February 12, 2010
A lot of good things can happen when a team values the basketball. Just ask the Bonner Springs Bravettes.
All season they have struggled with turnovers — especially in the first half, but on Friday night they were nearly flawless in the destruction of the Turner Lady Bears in a 55-24 victory at the Bonner Springs YMCA.
The improved play from sophomore point guard Yessenia Hernandez led the charge for the Bravettes off the bench. She turned in the best game of her career, knocking down two 3-pointers and leading a furious fast break over and over again on her way to scoring 10 points.
Starting freshman point guard Haley Hoffine got BSHS started with six points during a 12-0 run in the first quarter.
Bonner Springs scored 35 points in the first half, but it left several points off the board by going a chilly 12-of-26 from the free throw line. But it didn’t matter.
In the third quarter, the Bravettes crushed Turner with a 17-3 run causing the officials to use a running clock. Kaw Valley League rules state that a 30-point difference in the score causes the clock to run through all whistles during the fourth quarter.
The win gives the Bravettes their second in a row and something to build on. They now are 5-10 overall and 4-5 in the Kaw Valley League. They are in a three-way tie for sixth with Tonganoxie and Piper.
