Booster club fundraiser sees boost to auction

February 18, 2010

Organizers of the Bonner Springs High School Booster Club’s Second Annual Chris Cakes Pancake Supper and Silent Auction are getting excited about this weekend’s event — a feeling that is certainly helped along by the influx of items they have received for the silent auction this year.

“Right now I’m at 169 auction items,” said BSHS Booster Club member Laurie Steuart, who is organizing the silent auction portion of the evening.

Steuart said the dollar amount of the items, which include race tickets to the Kansas Speedway and a two-hour limo ride with Edwardsville-based Custom Limousine, was quite a bit more than last year — around $11,700. Last year’s event was able to auction off 101 items worth $8,125.

Given the economy, Steuart said she was surprised at the generosity she has seen during the past several months. All of the items were donated through Steuart’s efforts.

She said she started last September, sending out 400-500 letters and e-mails to various organizations and businesses, asking for donations.

“It’s a lot more. It’s a tremendous amount more than what I thought I would get,” Steuart said of the items.

And for Steuart and the other organizers of the pancake supper and silent auction, including Booster Club member Dawn Jackson, it can’t be any more obvious why the silent auction needs to have as many items as it can get.

The event raises money for student athletes and their coaches in the district.

“With budget cuts, and sports being one that seems to be being affected by some of those cuts, we wanted to make sure that coaches and students would be able to benefit from raising some more money that would go directly back to helping our student athletes,” Jackson said.

The event will start at 4:30 p.m., when the silent auction will open and the Chris Cakes all-you-can-eat pancake supper will begin.

For those who haven’t experienced such an event before, Chris Cakes is a pancake catering company that also doubles as a performance troupe, mixing expert pancake flipping techniques with improvisational comedy.

During the supper, people can write their bid on bid cards attached to each of the items. The silent auction will close at 7 p.m., and the winners will be announced.

Jackson said last year, 325 people attended the event, and the Booster Club was able to raise more than $5,500 for athletics. Her hope was that this year, the proceeds would be in the $7,500-$8,000 range.

“We hope to have a successful night to be able to do more with supporting our student athletes,” she said.

The Second Annual Chris Cakes Pancake Supper and Silent Auction will be Friday, Feb. 19, in the Bonner Springs High School cafeteria, 100 N. McDanield.

Admission is $5 for adults and $3 for children ages 5 and under.

Top silent auction items include:
