Bonner student wins in statewide art contest

February 25, 2010

A student from Bonner Springs has been chosen as one of the winners of the Kansas Foundation for Agriculture in the Classroom’s post card art contest.

Claire Walsh, of Bonner Springs, won in the fifth grade category.

More than 630 kindergarten through sixth grade students from 22 counties across the state entered this year’s contest by designing a post card around the theme “Kansas Crops: Seeds of Understanding.” Artwork was judged on relevance to the theme, creativity, originality, use of color, use of space, and clarity of idea and image. A first prize winner was selected from each grade level along with one grand prize winner. Each first prize award recipient will receive a $50 U.S. savings bond and the grand prize winner will receive a $100 bond.

“Youth participants did a great job interpreting the theme,” said Cathy Musick, executive director of the Kansas Foundation for Agriculture in the Classroom. “It is a pleasure to share this artwork with others so they can begin to comprehend the importance of agriculture in their daily lives.”

The student artists will be recognized on March 18 during the Kansas Ag Day celebration, which will be at the State Capitol Building in Topeka. There they will have the opportunity to meet Kansas Secretary of Agriculture Josh Svaty, who will present them with their award certificates and U.S. Savings bonds. The winners will receive framed copies of their artwork as well as packets of post cards that they can share with their families and friends.

Other winners included:

• Grand prize (fourth grade): Ellie Green, Prairie Village

• Kindergarten: Ryah Griffin, Manhattan

• First grade: Kara Bruna, Hanover

• Second grade: Erick Garcia, Garden City

• Third grade: Ethan Entz, Newton

• Fourth grade: Lindsey Gile, Sedgwick

• Sixth grade: Lyndie Copeland, Holton

The Kansas Foundation for Agriculture in the Classroom has been hosting the contest since 1999. Kansas Department of Agriculture is a financial partner in this endeavor, providing funding for the prizes as well as the celebration.
