The Clark Middle School Jazz Band and the Bonner Springs Kicks Band will perform at 7:30 p.m. Monday, March 1, in the Clark Middle School auditorium, 420 N. Bluegrass Drive.

The combined concert has been an idea of Jazz Band director Mike Leonard for more than two years.

“It’s just finally coming into fruition,” Leonard said. “It’s going to be cool.”

During the concert, the CMS jazz Band, which is made up of seventh- and eighth-graders, will play four songs, the two combined bands will play three songs and the Kicks Band will end the night.

A special feature of the Kicks Band will be saxophonist and composer Bobby Watson, who started his long career as a fifth-grader in Bonner Springs. Watson currently teaches jazz studies at the University of Missouri/Kansas City, Conservatory of Music.

“Just to see professionals who are lifelong appreciators of jazz,” Leonard said about what he hopes his students take away from the combined concert. “Just to see how well they play and conduct themselves will be a real education for us.”

Admission to the concert will be $2.
