Santa Fe Trail girls rally past Bravettes, 50-43

February 25, 2010

Senior Night did not go as planned for the Bonner Springs girls basketball team Tuesday night at the District PE Center.

The Bravettes fell to the Santa Fe Trail Chargers, 50-43, despite leading by as many as 12 points in the game.

The Chargers showed the Bravettes what experience can do for a team. While BSHS only has two seniors — Lynsey Ostman and Meg Fowler — Trail has five in its starting lineup. Despite trailing by double digits and turning the ball over nine times in the first half, Trail crashed the glass, kept Bonner within its sights and never panicked.

Trailing 26-17 at halftime, the Chargers used an 8-1 run to open the third quarter and close the gap. They controlled the ball better with only six turnovers in the second half and got the ball to spots they could score from — primarily drawing fouls so they could score from the free throw line.

Trail went to the line 34 times and converted 25 of its chances, including 18 makes in the fourth quarter. The Chargers attempted 24 more free throws than the Bravettes.

The Bravettes could never string together consecutive good possessions in the second half as the Chargers took control of the game. Despite being whistled for so many fouls, Bonner Springs never was in foul trouble.

Ostman, playing her last game at home, played well and worked within the offense and defensive systems, but never once looked to shoot and went scoreless.

Fowler, in limited minutes, scored two points and pulled down two rebounds.

Freshman Haley Hoffine led the way with nine points, Erica Smith had seven and Erica Wilson added six.

The Bravettes (6-13) close out the regular season at 6 p.m. Friday at Basehor-Linwood (12-7). They will learn their Class 5A substate seeding on Saturday.
