Bonner Springs state wrestling updates: Day 1

Blackwell reaches state finals; Seaton to medal for third straight year

7:07 p.m. update — Bonner Springs freshman Jonathan Blackwell has had one heck of a debut at the Class 5A wrestling state tournament.

Blackwell is 3-0 so far, and his latest victory — a 5-1 decision against Highland Park's Tyrell Carstarphen — has propelled Blackwell into the state finals at 130 pounds.

Blackwell (35-11) will square off Saturday night against Emporia sophomore Brandon Charbonneau (36-4).

6:48 p.m. update — Caleb Seaton's bid for a Class 5A state championship has ended.

The Bonner Springs junior lost in the 119-pound semifinals, 7-2, to Blaine Smith of Salina South.

Seaton is guaranteed to be a state medalist, anywhere between third and sixth. He will wrestle two matches on Saturday to determine his final placing.

Meanwhile, freshman 130-pounder Jonathan Blackwell is preparing to compete in his state semifinal match against Highland Park's Tyrell Carstarphen.

6:25 p.m. update — All five Bonner Springs wrestlers will compete again Saturday at the Class 5A state tournament.

Brian Callahan joined his teammates in day two by winning an elimination match against Brady Munsch of Salina South, 9-2, in the first round of the consolation bracket.

Callahan, 103-pounder Justus Seaton and 140-pounder Aaron Puckett will compete in the cross-bracketing round Saturday morning.

Meanwhile, 119-pounder Caleb Seaton and 130-pounder Jonathan Blackwell will compete tonight in the state semifinals.

4:08 p.m. update — Round two is now over at the Class 5A state wrestling tournament, and Bonner Springs is in 13th place with 25 points. Emporia is in first with 68, Andover Central is second with 56 and Lansing is third with 51. Shawnee Heights and Arkansas City are tied for fourth with 49.

3:01 p.m. update — Freshman 140-pounder Aaron Puckett has more work to do if he wants to become a state medalist. Puckett lost his state quarterfinal match to Codie Bontz of Andover Central by a 6-4 decision.

Puckett now must win two matches on Saturday to reach the medal rounds.

2:54 p.m. update — Two Bonner Springs wrestlers have assured themselves of state medals — so far.

Junior Caleb Seaton will become a three-time state medalist. He earned a 9-5 decision against Aaron Seybold of Pittsburg to advance to the 119-pound semifinals. He will face Blaine Smith of Salina South later tonight for a shot at reaching the finals.

Freshman Jonathan Blackwell picked up a 6-3 decision against Mario Corado of Pittsburg in the quarterfinals. at 130 pounds. The BSHS freshman next faces Tyrell Carstarphen of Highland Park, with the winner advancing to Saturday's state finals.

Freshman 103-pounder Justus Seaton dropped a 6-4 decision to Javier Vieya of Salina South in the quarterfinals. Seaton now needs two victories tomorrow to reach the medal rounds.

Freshman Aaron Puckett is now on deck to wrestle his 140-pound quarterfinal match.

1:29 p.m. update — Round one is complete at the Class 5A state championships. Lansing and Andover Central are tied for first in the team standings with 26 points. Emporia is third with 25, followed by Arkansas City with 22 and St. Thomas Aquinas with 21. Bonner Springs is in 14th with 15 points.

1:05 p.m. update — The first round is nearing completion, but the Bonner Springs wrestlers are done with their opening-round matches. The Braves went 4-for-5. Junior Brian Callahan lost a 6-2 decision to Garrett Hoover of Winfield at 171 pounds. Callahan now moves into an elimination match against Brady Munsch of Salina South.

Bonner Springs' other four wrestlers all reached the championship quarterfinals.

With two weight classes left to finish in the first round, the Braves are tied for 10th in the team standings.

11:47 a.m. update — Make it 4-for-4. The Bonner Springs wrestling team's remarkable run through the opening round of the state wrestling tournament continues.

Freshman Aaron Puckett needed just 37 seconds to pin David Amer of Bishop Miege. Puckett now advances to the championship quarterfinals against Codie Bontz of Andover Central.

Puckett's safe passage into the quarterfinals means all three BSHS freshmen have won their first match at state. Junior Caleb Seaton also is into the next round.

Junior Brian Callahan has yet to compete in his first-round match at 171.

11:15 a.m. update — The Braves improve to 3-for-3 in the first round at state. Freshman Jonathan Blackwell delivered a dominating performance as he rolled to a 20-3 technical fall against Newton's Miles Johns.

Blackwell now joins teammates Justus and Caleb Seaton in the championship quarterfinals. Blackwell will face Pittsburg's Aaron Seybold.

10:55 a.m. update — The first round is under way, and the five-man army from Bonner Springs currently sits in fourth place in the team standings — a half-point out of second — after three weight classes of competition.

That's because the first two Braves that have hit the mat — brothers Justus Seaton and Caleb Seaton — picked up victories.

Justus Seaton, a freshman, started things off with a first-period pin of Schlagle's Ricky Lee at 103 pounds.

Seaton now moves on to the quarterfinals where he will face Javier Vieya of Salina South.

In the 119-pound class, junior Caleb Seaton rolled to a 15-0 technical fall against Derek Stiles of Hays.

Caleb Seaton next competes in the quarterfinals against Aaron Seybold of Pittsburg.

Bonner Springs' Jonathan Blackwell (130), Aaron Puckett (140) and Brian Callahan (171) have yet to wrestle.
