Puckett, Seaton finish 4th
Wichita Jonathan Blackwell's magnificent state tournament run came to an end in the 130-pound state finals Saturday night.
Blackwell, a freshman, battled his way into the championship match before dropping a 6-3 decision to Brandon Charbonneau of Emporia.
Blackwell fell behind 4-0 early but rallied to pull within 4-2 with one minute to go.
Blackwell ends the season with a 35-12 record.
4:20 p.m. update — The tournament staff is setting up the mats for the championship finals, and Bonner Springs freshman Jonathan Blackwell is in the building warming up.
It's fitting that the rap song "We Ready" is pumping on the arena sound system right now, because Blackwell looks calm, collected and focused while standing with coach Brandon Jobe just beyond the arena floor.
The finals begin at approximately 4:45 p.m. Blackwell (35-11) will meet Emporia sophomore Brandon Charbonneau (36-4) in the 130-pound finals at about 5:20 p.m.
3:29 p.m. update — Aaron Puckett lost his final match of the Class 5A state tournament in a 5-2 decision against Nick Schwager of Great Bend, but Puckett had a smile on his face a few minutes later.
The Bonner Springs freshman capped his first year of high school wrestling as a fourth-place state medalist.
3:12 p.m. update — Caleb Seaton scored an escape point with 9 seconds to go, but he was unable to score the winning takedown in a 4-3 defeat in the third-place match at 119 pounds.
Seaton ends as a fourth-place state medalist for the third straight year.
1:21 p.m. update — It wasn't easy, but Caleb Seaton is headed back to the third-place match.
The Bonner Springs 119-pounder needed overtime to hang on for a 9-7 decision against Jonathan Peterson of Hutchinson in the consolation semifinals.
Seaton now will wrestle for third place. He has finished fourth the past two years.
Freshman Aaron Puckett also will compete for third place. Puckett cruised to a 10-1 major decision against Gardner-Edgerton's Micah Flora-Swick in the consolation semifinals.
11:45 a.m. update — Welcome back to the Intrust Bank Arena and the Class 5A state wrestling tournament.
It has been a busy morning for the Bonner Springs wrestlers. So far, two have had their season come to an end, and another earned a place in the medal rounds.
Junior 171-pounder Brian Callahan was edged, 5-4, in a controversial finish in his consolation cross-bracketing round match. Callahan led 4-3 in the final seconds, but officials awarded his opponent two back points after time expired to hand the match the other way. It was a judgment call that required an officials' discussion after the match, and eventually a protest from BSHS coach Brandon Jobe. Both wrestlers still had their arms locked around each other, and Callahan was on his seat but not fully on his back when the call was made.
Meanwhile, freshman 103-pounder Justus Seaton won his first match of the day, a 4-2 decision against Kevin Arnhold of Hays. Seaton then was pinned in the consolation quarterfinals by Chris Burley of Great Bend, ending Seaton's season one victory shy of the medal rounds.
Freshman 140-pounder Aaron Puckett will be a state medalist.
Puckett earned a 12-6 major decision against Erik Torres of Wyandotte in the cross-bracketing round and then earned a 4-0 decision against Brent Koehn of Pittsburg in the consolation quarterfinals.
Puckett now advances to face Micah Flora-Swick of Gardner-Edgerton in the consolation semifinals. He will finish anywhere between third and sixth at state.
Puckett will be joined on the medal stand by teammates Caleb Seaton and Jonathan Blackwell. Seaton, a junior, is in the consolation semifinals at 119 pounds while Blackwell, a freshman 130-pounder, will wrestle tonight in the state finals.
