Tardiness costly for BSHS swimmers
January 27, 2010
Tuesday’s Shawnee Mission West Invitational served as the Bonner Springs boys swimming team’s final tune-up before the Wyandotte County Championships, and the dual was a one-sided affair was the Vikings cruised to a 136-46 victory.
Blaine Edmondson’s first-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle in 2 minutes, 6.52 seconds, was the lone BSHS victory out of 12 events.
Senior captain J.K. Kraus took second in the 100 butterfly (1:12.40) and was a member of the third-place 200 medley relay team (2:06.52), and the second-place 200 freestyle relay team (1:56.64).
Tyler Dubin took third in the 100 backstroke (1:19.35).
Coach Lynn LaNoue was happy with his team’s effort, but he noted that his team was missing several top swimmers.
“We looked all right, but we were missing some of the key swimmers, so having some other guys step up was nice,” LaNoue said. “We are still working hard and we are just now setting ourselves up to be competitive, but it has been frustrating. The team has had some major obstacles to overcome.”
LaNoue has struggled getting his relays set for competition because of his practice rules. A swimmer must participate in the two practices leading up to a meet, and some of the Braves have not followed that rule. LaNoue hopes that will change.
“It has not been possible to set our relay teams,” LaNoue said. “I still think we will be strong enough that we may be able to win (at WYCO), but the last time we met Turner they beat us.”
The Wyandotte County Championships take place at 4 p.m. today at Turner.
LaNoue hopes that the previous loss to Turner will motivate his team to compete to win today.
“The guys like to compete for medals — they like those external motivators,” he said.
