Bravettes edged by Lansing, 43-41

January 29, 2010

The Bonner Springs Bravettes played their best three quarters of basketball all season on Friday night.

Fortunately for Lansing, basketball is a game that is four quarters long. The Lions withstood a vicious charge by the home team and came away with a 43-41 victory.

After falling behind 15-7 in the first quarter, the Bravettes were in danger of getting run out of their gym. Midway through the second quarter they trailed by 16, but all of the sudden they started playing lock-down defense on dynamic LHS point guard Amy Briggs. The frustrated Briggs committed her second foul earning her a seat on the bench next to her coach.

Bonner took full advantage, closing the half on a 15-7 run and cutting the deficit to seven points at intermission.

Sophomore forward Erin Marx scored seven points in the third quarter including a buzzer-beating put-back to close the gap to only two points heading into the final period.

With 23 seconds remaining in the game, Marx pulled down a missed Lansing free throw and was fouled, but she missed the front end of a one-and-one. Lansing could not convert a free throw, setting up a final play for the Bravettes. After the Lions deflected the ball out of bounds, the Bravettes had three seconds remaining.

Coach Clay Oakes designed a play that had junior guard Erica Smith coming off a screen. Briggs, who was on her, fought through the screen and got a hand in Smith’s face as she hoisted a three-pointer that would have won the game for Bonner, but the shot was a bit too strong and caught the far side of the rim before falling to the court as the buzzer sounded.

BSHS next plays Saturday in the seventh-place game of the Wellsville Top Gun Tournament.
