There is a new sense of dedication from members of the Bonner Springs High School volleyball program.

This year a group of girls have started to play year-round, and with the early results back, the extra work seems to be paying off.

The team cruised to a 33-3 record and won the spring league at Okun Fieldhouse in Shawnee.

Year-round leagues take place at Okun Fieldhouse for girls of all ages, including a competitive high school league made up of girls from all over the Kansas City metro area.

The Bonner Springs team had seven girls, all current BSHS students or students-to-be in the fall; senior Kaleigh Crider, juniors Jessie Kelly and Bobbi Allred, sophomores Madison Scott and Miranda Hackney, and freshmen Megan McCullough and Maryssa Peterson.

“They won the league and played very well together,” coach Greg Scott said. “They played well the entire league and showed great sportsmanship. We were very proud of them, especially with the respect they showed the other coaches and officials.”

Scott was joined on the sidelines by Shelly Hackney and Denise Scott to round out the coaching staff. A few of the parents committed their time, along with the girls, to improve their volleyball skills while confirming their dedication to helping the BSHS varsity program in the fall.

“We have more and more girls showing interest in playing year-round volleyball, but some of the girls wanting to play have scheduling conflicts with the other sports they are playing (in the spring),” Scott said. “This is a great opportunity and tune-up in preparation for next year’s high school volleyball season.”

The summer league began June 6, and the team will try to win another league championship.

“The future of BSHS volleyball teams will improve tremendously with the efforts and support of the players, parents and coaches,” Scott said.
