Freseros to see expansion in the form of cantina
July 8, 2010
Downtown Bonner Springs will soon have a new drinking establishment on its hands.
Kathy and Miguel Morado, owners of Freseros Mexican Restaurant at 224 Oak St., are expanding their business to include a bar next door.
“We’re going to call it Freseros Mexican Restaurant and Cantina,” Kathy Morado said of her business’ new name.
Kathy said she decided to add the cantina to her restaurant after receiving numerous requests from her customers for margaritas. Also, she said, the timing was right. Formerly located at 220 Cedar St., the Morados moved their business to Oak Street in February in the hopes the busier street would draw more business. As it turned out, they were right.
“We had been wanting to do it because business seems to be better here in the main downtown strip,” Kathy Morado said.
Business has been so good, Kathy said, that on busy weekend nights, people would often have to wait for a table, making an expansion even more necessary. The Morados had the wall between Freseros and the vacated business next door knocked out about two weeks ago, creating two separate rooms that customers and wait staff can easily move back and forth between. The main dining room will still be in the original location, but the cantina next door will offer additional tables for seating, a bar and, as Kathy said, “more options.”
“Like having drinks with your dinner, if you’re looking for a nice place to have a drink and a good meal,” she said of what her business will provide with the cantina.
The Morados are still waiting on their liquor license, but Kathy said she expects the cantina to be open by week’s end. Drink offerings will include Bud Light, Coors Light, Miller Lite, Blue Moon and Boulevard Unfiltered Wheat on tap, in addition to a variety of margaritas and other specialty drinks.
Kathy said she’s looking forward to another place downtown, in addition to Kobi’s Bar and Grill, 113 Oak St., where residents and visitors can go to enjoy a drink. It’s all about options, she says.
“I think there’s plenty (of business) to go around in Bonner, and the more options we have in downtown Bonner, the more people are going to come,” Kathy said. “I would even welcome another restaurant … the more that’s here, the more people will come to the downtown area; the more varieties (of businesses) we have.”
Depending on business, Freseros Mexican Restaurant and Cantina will be open until 2 a.m. weekend nights and some week nights. Contact Freseros at (913) 441-4161 for more information.
