Month of July all about ‘great outdoors’

July 8, 2010

Staff Reports

Despite the hot and humid temperatures, the Bonner Springs Parks and Recreation Department would still like to encourage residents to venture outside as much as possible — especially during the month of July, when it is Parks and Recreation Month.

“Parks and Recreation Month increases awareness of the value and important benefits of recreation and parks to individuals, families and communities,” said Dustin Care, recreation coordinator. “Parks and recreation provides an excellent avenue to escape from the rigors of everyday life and enjoy all of the benefits and treasures of the great outdoors.”

During the month of July, the Bonner Springs Parks and Recreation Department will be offering food specials and reduced nightly admission from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Aquatic Park. But Care said there was also a number of activities residents could do on their own to not only recognize the month but to also get as much as they could out of “the great outdoors.”

“Other activities our department is encouraging people to do include walking through their neighborhood, going fishing or have a barbecue for National Hot Dog Day on July 17,” Care said.

The point of the month, he said, was really just to encourage people to spend some time together outside and get moving.

“Since school is out for the summer, parents should take time to play with their kids outdoors,” Care said. “Teach them a new sport or new skills. For those who do not have kids, being outdoors is a good alternative to being (sedentary). Get up and be active.”

The Bonner Springs Parks and Recreation Department is offering several activities throughout the summer for residents to participate in, including soccer in August and Camp Great Adventure for youths ages 6-12 during July and August. Care said he would like to see residents “take the time this month and become familiar with (their) local parks and recreation department.”

“I think everyone should take full advantage of the resources they have available with our parks and recreation department,” he said. “We offer a variety of programs and just want people to be active and try different things that they normally wouldn’t do.”
