Mayor’s return to council meeting applauded by city council
Mayor Clausie Smith made good on his promise that he would be back when he presided over Monday night’s Bonner Springs City Council meeting for the first time since suffering a small vessel stroke in May.
Smith was in good spirits, but also took a moment to reflect on the experience during his mayor’s report.
“I appreciate you picking up the ball for me while I was gone,” he told the council. “I think this has probably been the worst two months of my life … certainly in recent months. But we’ll get back, we’re coming back.”
Council President Jeff Harrington, along with several other council members, shared how glad they were to have Smith back as leader of city council meetings. During Smith’s absence, Harrington has taken over Smith’s mayoral duties.
“First I have to welcome Mayor Smith back,” Harrington said to much applause from all those in the room. “I’m tickled pink. I’ve been honored to help out as best I could and I’m very glad you’re back.”
