Event to send kids to camp

June 3, 2010

Summer camp is an experience some parents can’t afford to give their children, and for those parents, Walnut Grove Bible Church is offering an event to help them out.

The church is sponsoring a benefit picnic and auction to help send youths this summer to Camp Daniel, 16766 Cantrell Road in Bonner Springs.

“There’s some children, they would love to be able to pack their little sack lunch and go off to camp each day and come home and bubble over what all they did for a week in the summer,” said organizer Betty Rehm of the experience the benefit is meant to provide.

Three camps are being offered this summer at Camp Daniel, including a four-day Vacation Bible School day camp, for pre-kindergarteners to sixth-graders; a five-day overnight camp with meals included, for children in grades three to six; and a three-day overnight camp with meals included, for youths in grades three to eight. During camp, youths will get to take part in swimming, games, crafts and music in what Rehm said was a “Christian-based atmosphere.”

The benefit will include a free, with donations accepted, fried chicken lunch. Following lunch, picnicers will bid on their favorite dessert of homemade items such as cakes, cookies and pies. Gift baskets, ranging from an entire pasta meal to a tea set, will also be available for auction.

“I hope we raise enough funds that a lot of kids that would like to be able to come (can),” Rehm said.

The benefit will be from 1 to 5 p.m. Sunday, June 6, at Camp Daniel. Bring your own lawn chairs, and also swimsuits and towels for swimming in the Camp Daniel pool. Lunch will be served at 1:30 p.m. and the auction will be at 2:30 p.m.
