Chieftain wins honors from Kansas Press Association

March 11, 2010

The Chieftain and its staff will be honored next month for placing in the Kansas Press Association’s 2010 Awards of Excellence competition.

The newspaper won first place in nine categories, second-place honors in three categories and third-place in two categories in competition against other nondaily Kansas newspapers with circulation of up to 1,750 subscribers.

“It makes us proud when our staff is recognized in so many different areas, including writing and reporting in news and sports, photography, design and layout and online presentation,” said John Taylor, Chieftain editor. “But what we’re most proud of is being able every week to share news about the people in Bonner Springs and Edwardsville with our readers and advertisers.”

Staff writer Nicole Kelley won top honors in three categories, best news story, local business story and education story. Staff writer Melissa Treolo drew top honors in two categories — investigative story and series — for her look into the financial situation facing the National Agricultural Center and Hall of Fame. Sports editor Chris Wristen earned a first place for the top sports story.

In addition, the newspaper staff took honors for best design and layout, best newspaper Web site and best special section.

Staff members also won second-place honors in news photo, agricultural story, and sports story. Third-place awards won by the Chieftain were in series and sports story.

Awards of Excellence winners will be recognized during the Kansas Press Association convention on Saturday, April 24, at the Capitol Plaza Hotel in Topeka.
