Rotary collects big during roast event

March 15, 2010

During the weekly meeting of the Bonner Springs Rotary Club Monday, members announced that the club raised $4,495 from their roast event, held Saturday, Feb. 27.

The event, which roasted club member Roger Miller, was planned to raise funds to go toward the International Rotary Club’s efforts to end polio, which still exists in Afghanistan, India, Nigeria and Pakistan. Rotarians have a $200 million challenge in response to a grant challenge of $355 million given by the Bill and Linda Gates Foundation to eradicate polio. Each of the 33,000 Rotary clubs must raise at least $2,000 annually to meet this challenge by June 2012.

Also at Monday's meeting, two new members were sworn into the club. Nicole Gerken and Matt Eves are the newest members to join Rotary.

Gerken was also honored with the prestigious Paul Harris Fellow award, which is given to members who make significant financial contributions to the club. Gerken's award came for her planning efforts of the roast, which doubled the club's required annual donation to end polio.
