Braves’ Opat withdraws at state golf

May 27, 2010

Logan Opat’s day at the Class 4A golf state tournament did not go quite as well as he’d planned.

The Bonner Springs junior was the Braves’ only qualifier this season and had high hopes of getting good experience this year to set himself up for his senior season, but it was not to be.

Everything seemed to be going well for Opat on the front nine on Monday at Winfield Country Club. He shot a 47 on the way out — on pace to shoot a 94 like he did at the regional tournament a week earlier.

Opat made the turn and headed out for the back nine, but something went wrong as he stepped into the tee box at hole No. 12.

“(Logan) wasn’t feeling very well and started to cramp,” BSHS coach Ryan Hull said. “It was a hot day and some (people) thought he may have heat stroke. We decided to take him off the course and get some fluids in him.”

Opat was unable to complete his round, resulting in “did not finish” status on the score sheet.

“He had some good holes and some bad ones, and then he had to withdraw. I’m sure he is disappointed,” Hull said.

Nick VonLintel of Hays was the individual state champion with a 73.

Wichita Kapaun-Mt. Carmel won the team title with a 306, Hays was second at 322 and Hutchinson finished third at 324.
