Council debates house demolition, pulled funding for Tiblow Transit
November 11, 2010
With funding cuts for the Tiblow Transit and an unsafe building on city property, the Bonner Springs City Council soon will discuss the best use of funds it received from the sale of its EMS temporary trailer.
At the council’s meeting Monday, John Helin, city manager, reported the city received four bids for the trailer, the highest being $13,550. Helin asked the council if they would like to look into using the funds to demolish the house on Cedar Street that was used by EMS services until it was determined unsafe.
Helin also told the council the city had recently learned the Wyandotte Area Agency on Aging would be reducing the funding it provides for the Bonner Springs Senior Center and completely cutting the funding it provides for the Tiblow Transit.
It is not clear exactly how much funding will be lost for the senior center, but this year, the agency provided $4,550 to the Tiblow Transit, which was half of what was provided in 2009, Rita Hoag, city clerk, said.
Council member Rodger Shannon said maybe using the funds from the sale of the trailer to make up for the loss of Tiblow Transit funding was more important than removing the old house.
Council member Wayne Gray asked if the city could at least investigate the cost to demolish the house. He said he was concerned the unsafe, vacant house could attract teens or vagrants who could be injured or start a fire, and he would rather see it removed.
Helin said he would look into the cost of demolition and bring it back to the council for a final decision.

I wonder if the city could get volunteers to demolish the house if they were allowed to keep the materials.
