Inaugural Bobcat Football Alumni Kickoff Classic a success

September 2, 2010

Nearly 40 Basehor-Linwood High School football alumni returned Saturday to Kiester Field for the first Bobcat Football Alumni Kickoff Classic.

This event, which gave those in attendance the chance to play in seven-on-seven games on the new FieldTurf playing surface, marks the first attempt by the school’s football program to reach out to alumni in hopes of establishing an Alumni Club.

Graduates from as far back as 1986 joined a trio of 2010 grads in making the morning fun for all. The seven-on-seven games were followed by a tour of the district’s new Health and Wellness Center, and the chance for alumni to watch the 2010 Bobcats scrimmage in preparation for their season-opener Friday, Sept. 3, at home against Piper.

The Kickoff Classic was the brainchild of BLHS assistant head coach David Svoboda, who has been at the school since 2002.

“It was great to get to meet some of the young men who played in the days before I arrived, players who had done so many great things for our program,” Svoboda said. “I’m glad we could reach out to these guys and re-establish some connections for them.”

The Alumni Club, which Svoboda and Bobcat alum/former assistant coach Ryan Heffley have been working toward establishing for several years, is now in its infancy. But Svoboda and Heffley hope the Kickoff Classic will lead to other events, like a homecoming gathering or golf tournament.
