Letter: Right to be heard, to assemble

April 21, 2011

To the editor:

The First Amendment in the Bill of Rights provides, among other things, freedom of speech and freedom of the press. The First Amendment also provides for “the right of the people to peaceably assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.”

The group of supporters that gathered at the last city council meeting was well within its rights to speak against an ordinance that will affect Kobi’s ability to host the countless not-for-profit events and fundraisers it has organized in the past.

When our right to assemble for charity causes is threatened, we will speak up. That is what we do. We unite for shared causes and we give generously. This council has been gracious enough to hear both sides of this issue and they have the challenging task at hand to make the best decision possible. This council also has the obligation as elected officials to hear and take into consideration opinions that affect public policy.
