Braves have 3 champs at Wamego
Fresh off of a fifth-place finish at the Class 4A state tournament last season, the Bonner Springs wrestling team kicked off the 2011-2012 campaign with a strong showing Saturday at the Wamego Invitational.
The Braves had three individual champions and two runner-ups en route to a sixth-place finish out of 14 teams.
Tonganoxie won the team title with 206 points, Abilene was second with 172.5 and Concordia finished third with 166.5. Bonner Springs scored 109.5 points.
The Braves’ strength was at the heart of its lineup. The Big Three — Jonathan Blackwell, Mark Hobson and Aaron Puckett — all captured tournament championships. Blackwell, a state champion last year, earned a first-place finish at 145 pounds. Hobson, a fifth-place state medalist last season, was the tournament champion at 152 pounds. Puckett, who placed fourth at state last year, finished first at 160 pounds.
Also for the Braves, Justus Seaton earned a second-place finish at 113 pounds and Jared Clements was second at 170 pounds.
Tournament champion and Kaw Valley League rival Tonganoxie had no individual champions, but the Chieftains had 10 medalists out of 14 weight classes.
