Eight Braves medal at Osawatomie Invitational
February 3, 2011
The Bonner Springs High School wrestling team sent a smaller squad to the Osawatomie Invitational Saturday, but the Braves still turned in a strong performance.
They held most of their standouts out of the tournament but still showcased the depth of their lineup by bringing home eight medals.
BSHS placed sixth out of 16 teams. Blue Springs (Mo.) won the tournament with 330.5 points, Blue Valley West was second with 185 and Silver Lake took third with 140.5.
Austin Cobb, a 130-pounder, highlighted the day for the Braves. After receiving a first-round bye, Cobb earned a 16-1 technical fall against Chanute’s Levi Snow and moved on to the semifinals. Cobb then lost to eventual champion Darick Lapagia of Blue Springs, but Cobb bounced back with two straight victories and claimed third place.
Billy Fratzel took a similar path as Cobb before finishing fourth in the 119-pound bracket. Fratzel used a bye and a pin to reach the semifinals before falling to eventual champ Jacob Parise of Blue Valley West. Fratzel then won his next match before falling to Blue Springs’ Ty Hightower in the third-place match.
Four more Braves earned fifth-place finshes: 103-pounder Matt Coffman, 125-pounder Corey Williams, 189-pounder Caelan Burbank and 215-pounder Nick Clark. In addition, 160-pounder Jose Contreras and 285-pounder Austin Goodin both placed sixth.
The Braves next compete at 5:30 p.m. Thursday against Lansing and Tonganoxie at LHS and then again at 9 a.m. Saturday at the Wyandotte County Championships at BSHS.
