Five BSHS wrestlers qualify for state during Friday competition
February 19, 2011
It was an outstanding start to the Class 4A regional wrestling tournament for Bonner Springs.
Five Braves reached the finals and locked up state tournament berths during Friday competition at Holton High School. Two more Braves are one win away from qualifying, and another five are three victories away from qualifying.
BSHS sits in first place in the team standings with 112 points and St. James Academy is second with 111.
The state qualifiers so far are 112-pounder Justus Seaton, 125-pounder Caleb Seaton, 135-pounder Jonathan Blackwell, 140-pounder Aaron Puckett and 145-pounder Mark Hobson.
All five battled their way to the regional finals. Justus Seaton locked up his second straight state berth by upsetting second seed Michael Torrez of Basehor-Linwood in the second round and then pinning Holton’s Justin Twombley in the semifinals. He will face Tonganoxie’s Clayton Himpel in the regional finals Saturday.
Caleb Seaton cruised to the finals where he will meet Andrew Morgan of Baldwin.
Blackwell pinned his way to the finals, and he will square off with rival Symon Seaton — a defending state champion — of Basehor-Linwood. The pair have wrestled twice this season, each winning once.
Puckett used two pins and a 2-0 decision to reach the finals where he will meet defending state champion Taylor Moeder of St. James Academy.
Hobson used a bye and two pins to reach the finals. He will face Cass Steele of Jefferson County West for the championship.
BSHS 103-pounder Josiah Seaton reached the championship semifinals before losing. Jared Clements also made it to the semifinals at 171 pounds before losing. Both need one victory Saturday to qualify for state.
Also still alive are 119-pounder Billy Fratzel, 130-pounder Austin Cobb, 160-pounder Patrick Ballard, 215-pounder Nick Clark and 285-pounder Shawn Stirling. All five need to win three straight matches to qualify for state.
Chance Stites went 0-2 at 152 pounds and Caelan Burbank was 0-2 at 189. Both are eliminated from state contention.
