Live from state: Two in the state finals
Salina The Bonner Springs High School wrestling team is off to a good start in day one of the Class 4A state tournament.
The Braves have started strong at the Bicentennial Center as five BSHS wrestlers won their first-round matches.
Two Braves — 103-pounder Josiah Seaton and 171-pounder Jared Clements — fell in the opening round.
The rest of the Braves stormed into the quarterfinals as 112-pounder Justus Seaton, 125-pounder Caleb Seaton, 135-pounder Jonathan Blackwell, 140-pounder Aaron Puckett and 145-pounder Mark Hobson all won their opening matches.
The Braves are near the top of the team standings after the first round.
4:25 P.M. UPDATE
Two Braves still have their sights set on winning a state championship. Senior 125-pounder Caleb Seaton and sophomore 135-pounder Jonathan Blackwell both picked up quarterfinal victories.
Seaton earned a 7-5 decision against Chance Pitcock of Russell. He advances to face Tim Wrestler of Chanute in the semifinals later tonight.
Blackwell earned a 6-3 decision against Chanute's Troy Clark. Blackwell moves on to face Devon Dozier of Osawatomie in the semifinals.
Three other Braves — 112-pounder Justus Seaton, 140-pounder Aaron Puckett and 145-pounder Mark Hobson — all fell in the quarterfinals and now move into the consolation bracket.
5:05 P.M. UPDATE
Six Braves remain alive in the bracket at the Class 4A state tournament. Two just finished wrestling in the first round of the consolation bracket.
At 103 pounds, Josiah Seaton earned a pin. At 171 pounds, Jared Clements dropped a 6-0 decision.
Clements' season is over. Seaton moves on to the next round of the consolation bracket.
7:30 P.M. UPDATE
Bonner Springs hasn't had a wrestling state champion since 2004, but the Braves have a golden opportunity to change that on Saturday.
Senior 125-pounder Caleb Seaton and sophomore 135-pounder Jonathan Blackwell both won their semifinal matches Friday night and advanced to the state finals.
With their victories, BSHS moved into third place in the team standings — for the moment, at least. The standings are being updated by match as this round continues.
