Topeka —The Kansas Department of Social and Rehabilitation Services began accepting online applications for the Low Income Energy Assistance Program last week ahead of the opening of the program’s annual processing period.
Kansans can apply online at ks-energy-assistance.com and can submit a paper form from Jan. 13 through March 31, 2011. Applications submitted online will be processed starting Jan. 13. Submitting an early online application will expedite processing and help eligible households receive benefits sooner.
“Winter weather can be unpredictable in Kansas, and LIEAP helps ensure that families with low incomes have warm, safe homes throughout the cold season,” said acting SRS Secretary Laura Howard.
LIEAP provides an annual benefit to help qualifying households pay winter heating bills. The program primarily assists individuals with disabilities, elderly persons and families with children.
To qualify, applicants must be responsible for direct payment of heating bills. Income eligibility guidelines are set at 130 percent of the federal poverty level. The maximum allowable monthly income for a single person is $1,174 and increases $406 for each additional person in a household.
The level of benefit varies according to household income, number of persons living at the address, type of dwelling, type of heating fuel and utility rates.
Anyone receiving an SRS benefit (cash, medical, food assistance or LIEAP) will automatically receive an application packet in the mail by January 13, 2011, and they are encouraged to use the application and return envelope that is included to expedite processing. LIEAP applications are also available at local SRS offices or can be requested by calling toll-free (800) 432-0043. Visit ks-energy-assistance.com to submit an application online.
