LIVE BLOG: Bonner Springs regional soccer vs. KC Christian
Good evening from David Jaynes Stadium and the Bonner Springs High School boys soccer team's Class 4-1A regional playoff first-round game against Kansas City Christian.
The Braves enter with a 7-5-4 record and the Panthers are 8-8-0. The winner will advance to play in the regional finals at 3 p.m. Thursday at Piper.
6:11 p.m. — We're ready for kickoff between the Braves and Panthers.
Fourth minute — Neither team has fired a shot yet, but KC Christian has had a few dangerous setups while trying to work the ball to crafty forward Roy McGregor. It's been a physical match already with a few fouls on each side.
Ninth minute — KC Christian fires the first shot. Roy McGregor unleashes a blast from 30 yards out, but BSHS goalkeeper Brett Steuart denies him with a diving save.
15th minute — KC Christian continues to pressure the goal, but the Panthers are struggling to take shots before the BSHS defense clears the ball. Meanwhile, Bonner Springs has struggled to put together pass combinations and generate much offense. The Braves have settled for long balls.
20th minute — There hasn't been much flow to the game offensively for Bonner Springs. Meanwhile, KC Christian has controlled a majority of possession, but the Braves' defense has been up to the task of cutting off attacks and clearing the ball. Nate Mitchell, Austin Schuler, Noah Monroy and Dante Crider have had to hustle constantly to help goalkeeper Brett Steuart protect the net.
23rd minute — KC Christian's Thomas Gentry puts a line-drive shot on goal, but Brett Steuart again is up to the task.
24th minute — James Ryan creates a dangerous situation with his attack from the right side, but his shot missed just wide right of the BSHS goal.
26th minute — Thomas Gentry drills a shot from 30 yards out but it sails just over the crossbar. Moments later, Calvin Beck fires a shot that Brett Steuart stops with a diving save.
28th minute — Bonner Springs' Spencer Frank fires a high, bending cross into the box but is unable to find a connection. Moments later, Frank sends another ball into the box, and Spencer Bush collides with KCC goalkeeper Mitchell Pivovar while trying to get to it.
30th minute — Spencer Bush fires a direct kick from 25 yards out, but it sails high.
37th minute — A misplayed ball by Noah Monroy gave KC Christian's James Ryan a breakaway, but his cross from the right endline was corralled by Brett Steuart.
HALFTIME — Bonner Springs 0, KC Christian 0.
The Panthers have dominated possession and have created significantly more scoring opportunities, but the BSHS defense and goalkeeper Brett Steuart have stood tall and denied the Panthers each time. Play will resume after a 10-minute break.
Bracket update — Piper beat Bishop Ward 2-1 in 2OT in the other side of the regional bracket. The BSHS-KCC winner will play at 3 p.m. Thursday at Piper in the regional finals.
7:03 p.m. — The second half is now under way.
41st minute — KC Christian puts two shots on goal in a scramble in front of the box, but Brett Steuart blocks both of them and keeps the game scoreless.
The Braves face an added challenge this half of having to attack into a strong headwind.
44th minute — KC Christian's Calvin Beck puts a shot off the left post. Moments later, Brad Tippin sends a cross from right to left in the box and finds Andrew Painter open on the back side for a goal. KCC 1, BSHS 0.
45th minute — The Panthers' James Ryan puts a shot on goal, but Brett Steuart blocks it with a kick save.
51st minute — Colin Kettler fires a throw-in into the box, and Thomas Gentry redirects it with a header that misses just wide to the left.
56th minute — Bonner Springs had its best opportunity of the second half when the keeper came out to challenge Spencer Bush near the front left corner of the box. The ball was deflected to Spencer Frank, but the KCC defense packed in and didn't allow a shot while its keeper returned to the net. A missed opportunity for the Braves.
61st minute — Spencer Frank sends a shot just wide left from 30 yards out.
63rd minute — KC Christian mounts an aggressive counter attack with a 2-on-1 situation. James Ryan led the charge down the right side and slipped a pass to his left to Calvin Beck, but Beck's shot sailed wide left.
65th minute — KCC's Andrew Painter sets up James Ryan for a nice look from 10 yards out, but Ryan's shot misses the bottom of the left post by about a foot.
71st minute — Braves get a great look as Spencer Bush sends a corner kick into the box. Spencer Frank redirected it, and Nate Mitchell's chip shot sailed just over the crossbar.
75th minute — Five minutes remain in regulation and the Braves are running out of time.
77th minute — Spencer Bush sends a corner kick into the box, but after two headers kept it airborne the KCC defense cleared it. It's a play that is indicative of the way the game has gone for the Braves. A few opportunities without capitalizing.
Final score: Kansas City Christian 1, Bonner Springs 0.
