Thunderstorm interrupts good day for Bonner Springs tennis squad

September 22, 2011

A heavy thunderstorm washed out the best day of tennis so far for the Bonner Springs girls on Saturday at the Mill Valley Invitational.

The Braves started pool play in impressive fashion with numerous victories. Shortly before noon, however, a storm rolled in and soaked the courts. Players were in the third round of pool play at that point, and life was good for Bonner Springs.

“Everyone was in round three, and we were winning most of them when the rain hit,” BSHS coach Bill Scott said. “If we could have completed that round, five of our six would have been playing for medals.”

The Braves lost to Blue Valley in the first round and rolled through Maranatha Academy in round two. Most of the Braves were leading their matches against Lansing in the third round when the rain started.

Number one singles player Breanna Tendick dropped a 6-0 decision to her Blue Valley opponent, but she bounced back with a 6-2 victory against Maranatha and held a 4-3 lead against Lansing when the storm began.

The number one doubles pair of Melissa Cisneros and Bethany Bailey lost to Blue Valley and beat Maranatha.

At number two doubles, Toni Stock and Lauren Callahan lost 6-2 to Blue Valley and won 6-3 against Maranatha.

Only number two singles player Hannah Hunt, who lost 6-0 to her Blue Valley opponent and 6-4 to her Maranatha opponent, wasn’t on pace to reach the medal matches.

“They decided to add up games one to games played for rounds one and two only and award medals for highest percentage of games won to games played,” Scott said of the scoring system used. “It is too bad that Blue Valley was not our last round, because we would have been sitting pretty good for medals.”

Blue Valley won the tournament in a tiebreaker against Mill Valley.
