Braves third at Missouri wrestling tournament

December 18, 2012

The Bonner Springs wrestling team placed in the top three at the Lee's Summit Invitational this weekend, but head coach Brandon Jobe said the team still has work to do.

The Braves earned 273.5 points to place third at the 22-team meet, falling only behind Park Hill South (277.5) and McCleur North (286.5) at the tournament. Last year, the Braves placed fourth.

“We’re in a good spot but we’ve got a long way to go,” Jobe said.

Both seniors Jonathan Blackwell and Aaron Puckett won their brackets, wrestling at 152 and 160 pounds respectively. At 106-pounds, junior Josiah Seaton finished second in his class and senior Justus Seaton secured a third place finish at 113 pounds. Junior Les Wessel placed fourth at 285 pounds.

“Most of these guys are pretty experienced and know what to expect,” Jobe said of his top-place finishers. “They were executing things pretty well.”

Some areas that Jobe said his team needs to improve on are positioning and technique.

“We’re doing good but we just need to clean some things up,“ he said.

With the first part of the season complete, Jobe said as a coach he can now begin to work individually with each wrestler.

“The first part of the season we just focus on solid fundamentals and getting everybody on the same page with terminology,” he said. “Now we can branch off and start looking at the strengths and weaknesses of each guy and fixing those things.”

The Braves don’t return to the mat again until Saturday Jan. 5 for their annual Dick Burns Mat Classic at 8:30 a.m.
