— Basehor-Linwood’s offensive renaissance continued Tuesday night against Turner. The girls basketball team defeated Turner 74-36 in a game that should provide the Bobcats momentum entering Friday’s final game of the regular season against Bonner Springs and next week’s substate play.

It was another sign of improvement for the Bobcats. A team that once struggled to score 10 points in a half, Basehor-Linwood has developed a balanced attack and eclipsed 70 points twice since January.

Against Turner, Bailey Hooker scored seven consecutive points to give the Bobcats an early 7-0 lead. She finished 20 for the game. The Bobcats led 17-4 at the end of the first quarter and were off to an unusually fast start on Turner’s home court.

“We never shoot really well in this gym for some reason,” coach Noah Simpson said. “Tonight though, we got off to a good start with Bailey scoring those early points.”

Hooker said that she has enjoyed playing for Basehor-Linwood and feels like she has improved a lot on her post play. The physical practices have toughened the team up in the lane.

“She progresses each day,” Simpson said. “She is still working to improve some things and wants to get better.”

The second quarter of play was even as the two teams each scored 17 points. Victoria Smith had five points for the Bobcats. McKenna Mortell scored eight points for the Bears, and the halftime

score was 36-21 Basehor-Linwood. In the third quarter, Hooker led the Bobcats with four points and the team

led 50-29 at the end of the quarter. The Bobcats continued to roll in the fourth quarter, building a 30-point lead with 2:30 left in the game. Hooker led the Bobcats with 20 points and was the only

player to finish in double figures. Haley Waters finished with eight points. Samantha Rutherford finished with four points. Amber Garver finished with two points and Cara McCarty finished with seven points. Maggie Hattock scored three points and Victoria Smith scored nine points. Alex Gorman scored three points, NaQari Harris scored six points and Kara Stephens scored four points. Madison McDowell scored six points. The Bears were led by McKenna

Mortell who scored 20 points. Laura Wiseman scored six points and Clarissa Padilla scored five points. With the win, Basehor-Linwood now prepares to play Bonner Springs on Friday.

“The Bonner game is huge,” he said. “It is a tough game for us. Early in the season they beat us pretty good.”

The progress the team has made has also inspired confidence.

“If we go out and play hard, we are capable of winning against anybody we play,” Simpson said.

The game will likely not count toward substate seedings, but could provide the team with further momentum going into substate play next week.

Basehor-Linwood will also honor its seniors on Friday night. The team will honor Hooker, McCarty and Hattock during senior night ceremonies.
